If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the STENCYL file, then click "Open with" > "Other.". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.STENCYL files". Windows: Right click on any STENCYL file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Associate the STENCYL file extension with the correct application.Most of my students do not have the level of experience with the program necessary to troubleshoot what's broken. Most of it's kits were designed on a previous version and break once imported into the new version. Stencyl is awesome for making Platformer Games, but when it comes to something more robust, like an RPG, Stencyl has more glitches and frustration than success. Find games tagged Stencyl like Lesbian Vampire Simulator, Rising Dusk, SkateRide, Tiny Dangerous Dungeons, Plactions on itch.io, the indie game hosting. Unfortunately, this fall, Stencylforge was down more than it was up, rendering the whole program a bit clunky and useless and leaving students frustrated and stranded. Stencylforge, Stencyl's marketplace for user-created resources is heavily promoted within the application as the main source for graphics, sounds, behaviors etc. This definitely gives students more freedom and challenge than Gamestar. I've been using this for a couple of years now. The sweet part for teachers is that it is free. Basically, it's blocks-based programming made specifically for game design.
Stencyl is "a drag-and-drop gameplay designer" (Stencyl website), modeled after the MIT Scratch project. I keep trying to squeeze its potential awesomeness out. I really really really want to love Stencyl. The Educator's Kit has a setup guide, two weeks of lessons, student activities, and a final project. Stencyl when updating how to after making a couple half-games (figured out how to do what i wanted in both cases and never finished the entire games) hopefully this book will help me to complete a more complex game with stencyl, and then move onto another more advanced tool if i need to after that. In addition to the support website and core program itself, Stencyl comes with an image editor, a database of free user-created resources, and an online reference encyclopedia. The Stencyl website is very comprehensive and full of tutorials, game ideas, help forums, and a live chat area. Plus, there's a live testing feature, so kids can see how their creations work in real time. With annual paid versions of Stencyl, games can be played (and optionally sold) on many additional platforms, including iOS and Android. To overcome any early frustration, students and teachers should dedicate a few hours to the helpful online tutorials.įinished games can be exported as stand-alone Flash files or can be uploaded to Stencyl itself. Tech-savvy users will find the interface intuitive and will dive right in, but the less experienced may initially be daunted. Building blocks of code makes the game very similar to MIT's Scratch, but with much more functionality. By snapping blocks of code together, students and teachers can create games (and curricula) that can be published on a variety of platforms. Stencyl is a game creation program that's focused on codeless, cross-platform game making.
